In Memory of the Fallen

As dawn approached Sunday morning there was a rumble of thunder and the skies threatened rain. But as the morning progressed, the skies broke, and for once, the weather cooperated. The annual Decoration Day Ceremony at the Maitland Cemetery was able to proceed without a hitch.

It was a moving moment to hear and see the Celtic Blue Highlanders under the leadership of Major Matt Hoy, lead the procession of veterans, Royal Canadian Air Cadets, and the Ladies Auxiliary onto the grounds.

The Goderich Laketown Band performed leading up to the service and also provided the musical accompaniment for the hymn sing. Archdeacon Allan Livingstone presided over the service followed by Pipe Major Matt Hoy performing “The Lament” on pipes and Katie Dockstader performing “The Last Post” and “The Rouse” on trumpet. Wreathes and poppies were laid at the memorial by The Town of Goderich, Royal Canadian Air Cadets, The Ladies Auxiliary, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109.

Unlike the more public commemorations that remember the fallen every November 11, this was a private moment where those connected to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice could reflect, remember and honour loved ones lost.
